From Funk and Wagnall's Encyclopedia:

GRAND MANAN ISLAND, SW New Brunswick, Canada, in the
Bay of Fundy, near Maine. The island has a maximum length of
about 26 km (about 16 mi) and an area of 137 sq km (53 sq mi).

Settled in the late 18th century, Grand Manan was claimed
by the United States until 1817 when it was traded to the
British for Moose, Frederick and Dudley islands in
Passamaquoddy Bay, Maine.

The economy of the island is based chiefly on summer
tourism and fishing. The principal settlements are North
Head, Woodwards Cove, Grand Harbour, and Seal Cove.
