[Spoken with musical accompaniment]
The school room was decked out with holly and boughs,
With tinsel and jingle bells strung all around;
The children drew pictures of santas and sleighs,
And all were now eagerly counting the days.
The teacher said, "What is the best of all things,
You know about Christmas and the joy that it brings?"
Johnny said, "Santa and reindeer and toys."
Susie said, "Daddy's home - Mommy won't cry."
Mary said, "Turkey, nice, tasty, and hot."
Till everyone said what their little minds thought.
All except Jimmy, but no one would mind,
'Cause Jimmy said nothing much, most of the time.
He wasn't as bold and as quick as the rest,
So Jimmy was usually last on the list.
The teacher said finally, "Jim, what do you think
Is the best about Christmas and the joy that it brings?"
"Teacher," said Jimmy in a voice not too brave,
"It's the story how Jesus was born Christmas day.
Papa says it's called the best story told,
And no matter how often read, never grows old."
The teacher saw the sparkle in Jimmy's eyes grow.
She said, "Perhaps you could tell us this story you know."
He blushed and he stood up, though not overly bold,
And he told the greatest story that's ever been told.
Joseph went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth,
On to Judea, on to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem,
With his wife Mary, great with child.
And so it was that while she was there, she brought forth her first born son,
And wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger,
Because there was no room for them in the inn.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the fields,
Keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord
Came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone 'round about them.
And they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them,
"Fear not, for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy,
Which shall be to all people.
"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior,
Who is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you:
Ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger."
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host,
Praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, good will towards men."
There came wise men from the East to Jerusalem saying,
"We have seen His star in the East,
And are come to worship Him."
And lo, the star which they saw in the East
Went before them till it came and stood
Over where the young child lay.
