Is it just me or a message from above?
Bells are ringing and push has finally come to shove.
The door before me now is open just enough,
And I'm sick and tired of waiting
For dreams that never come
And games I never played in
But still wish that I had won.
Well, I'm alive...
I've got one shot and I'm taking it to you.
Well, I'm alive...
Though I realize not a moment too soon,
This is my one small step,
This is my walk on the moon.
Do you think their hands were shaking
As that rocket ship touched down?
I'm sure they shivered when they finally touched the ground.
And the giant leap so fragile it hardly made a sound,
Oh, it must have been amazing what a world they got to see.
Well, I don't care, my foolish fear won't get the best of me.
Well, I'm alive...
I've got one shot and I'm taking it to you.
Well, I'm alive...
Though I realize not a moment too soon,
This is my one small step,
This is my walk on the moon.
Well, I'm alive...
I've got one shot and I'm taking it to you.
I'm alive...
Though I realize not a moment too soon,
This is my one small step,
This is my one small step,
This is my walk on the moon.
####.... Alan Doyle and Gordie Sampson ....####
Recorded by Great Big Sea of St. John's, NL (Fortune's Favour, trk#2, 2008, Warner Music Canada, Scarborough, Ontario).
Liner notes: Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea wrote this song in Nashville with Grammy winner Gordie Sampson and originally demoed it for the Something Beautiful record, but it somehow never made the cut. A huge oversight in retrospect. This tune is very clearly about recognizing opportunity when it comes knocking and not being too nervous to open the door.
The YouTube video below features Keith Power's arrangement of this beautiful song for the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra with Marc David conducting, along with Alan Doyle and the other Alan Doyle Trio members, Cory Tetford and Kendel Carson, performing at the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra Gala in the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre. October 26, 2012.
The YouTube video below features a live performance by Great Big Sea at the 2007 Tønder Annual Folk Music Festival in Tønder, Denmark, which has always been held during the last weekend of August since its founding in 1975.
