Blank Masks & Examples

Most of you are familiar with & know how to use masks that look like this .

Recently, a question came up on how to use this kind, which is called an  inverted mask .

With the regular ones, your image and mask need to be the same size, and you composite the image into the mask using multiply.

There is really only 1 difference to using the inverted masks from the regular ones.

To use an inverted mask, simply change the composite to one of the following:

Screen - will give you a softer edge on the finished image. The one at the top of the page was done with screen.
Lighten - will give you a harder edge on the finished image.
Hardlight - will deepen the color on the original image and the mask.

Occasionally you may want to composite using difference . In that case your MASK should be slighly smaller than the image, so that you don't get a chopped off look. And it will change the white area to the opposite color of the image you are compositing.

I made a few blanks for you to play with, but, you can make your own out of any existing mask by taking it to IM and using negate on it. Negate is under ENHANCE.

There are also some examples of composited images for you to look at. The composite used is in the url name.

You can also change the white in the mask to any color you'd like before comping your main image. Go here for that information and an example.

Have FUN!
