Gold

Little did I know
that I would meet a kindred soul.

Unknown to me then,
We would be lifelong friends.

True friendship, like gold
never tarnishes and can
be shaped into almost any form

Like gold, we endure,
are precious, and are rare.

Like gold, friendship is
hard to cultivate and
an everlasting treasure.

I wrote this for two of my dearest friends in 1991. One friend was in the military over in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm and the other one was back home. I was still in the military and and received letters from both of them on the same day. As I was writing them back, the poem Gold came to me and I wrote it into each of their letters I was writing back to them.
