| Known as Castle Doom (or Glume) until 1490, this well preserved stronghold high on a rocky outcrop between the burns Care and Sorrow combines an impressive situation with much historical resonance. Colin Campbell, the first Earl of Argyll, built the tall rectangular tower, and then petitioned parliament to change the name. It remained the principal lowland seat of the mighty Argyll family and shared their fortune. John Knox found shelter and an eager audience as the forth Earl's protege in 1556. |
