The Mountains of Kintail

Scotland

Were they 'freedom fighters' or 'terrorists', those undernourished, ill clad and ill-equipped Catholic clansmen who rose against the Hanoverian Monarchy way back in the early 1700's? A small armada from friendly Spain was sent to aid the rebels, and they were garrisoned at Eilean Donan castle, across Loch Duich in this picture. Three English frigates were sent to sort them out, and blew the castle into wee bits. Amongst these mountains is a peak known as Sgurr na Spainteach - the peak of the Spaniards - in memory of them.
