In the old days gray shade was called emboss. If you have used emboss at Gifworks, you'll know what I mean.

Take any image to IM.

Enter the url and then go to EFFECTS

Check the GRAY SHADE button.

In the parameter test bx, type 25x25 (Note - you can make this higher or lower, but start with 25x25. Lower numbers are darker, higher numbers are lighter)

Go to ENHANCE.

Check the gamma button.

This is where the fun comes in.

Depending on which numbers you choose, your image will be colored.

The 1st number controlls RED

The 2nd number cotrolls GREEN

The 3rd number controlls BLUE.

So - if you want a shade of purple, use 2,1,2 <-- More red & blue than green

If you want blue-green, use 1,2,2 <-- more green & blue than red.

If you want gold, use 2,2,1 <-- red & green=gold

The higher the numbers the brighter the colors.

Experiment till you have a color you like.

Go to EFFECTS and use sharp 1x1

You can stop here, if you get something you love, or you can continue on to compsite.

Comp the original into your colored image.

The comps I found the most effective, and giving the best results are:

Difference, overlay, screen, softlight, threshold, luminize, exclusion, hardlight, darken, modulate, multiply and bumpmap.

Minus gives a great result, but you will need to brighten it and maybe a little saturate. (under enhance)

My image at the top of the page is this orginal . I used gamma 3,2,3, then comp'd it using difference.

Make me a pretty!

Have fun!
