Misting Images at Image Magic

 New - Make it Colored

Snaggers - Hands off the examples. NONE of these images are for snagging or posting.

A note before you start. Misted images are suppose to look something like the one at the top of the page. The edges should almost disappear, & the overall look is softer. That's the nature of the technique.

Decide on the image you want to mist and make a note of it's size.

Note! Images with lighter backgrounds work best for this effect. Dark or black bgs may not look as nice.

At IM make an xc meta=none. Make it 100 pixels less in width and height than your image. Example, if your image is 360 x 366, your grey square should be 260 x 266. Go to paint and choose reset, color=#c0c0c0, and click the center of your blank square.

Add a 50 x 50 white border.

Go to effects, choose gaussian blur. Type 20x20 in the text box. Click effect.

For an oval, start with an xc that is the _same size as your image, paint it white, then go to draw and make your oval. Keep the oval on the small side, so you have plenty of white border. Use stroke and fill color=#c0c0c0.

Skip the border part and go directly to effects, and apply the same as for the square.

If you are unfimiliar with draw or do not want to mess around with drawing an oval, you are welcome to use the blank/s below. PLEASE TRANSLOAD it to your own server!

April 29 - Update - Tips from Nancy:

1) I found that if my image came out too light after the overlay ... I went back to where I colored the original 'blank' xc ... instead of using #c0c0c0, I tried a much darker shade of grey and the final result had more of the original color.

2) I also tried "Spread" at 15x15 before the "GausianBlur" at 20x20 ... and I liked the result.

Tips from Sandy:

To have more of your image showing try adding a border of 30x30 around your image before you do the overlay comp.

Save your blanks at this point so you have them for future projects.

To complete the "misted look", simply composite the image you have chosen using OVERLAY.

If you want your name misted too, annotate the image before comping it on the blank.

On this one I comp'ed a gif in her hair after the overlay comp. Makes it stand out nicely.
