Welcome to alt.discuss
by robin-of-lox

Disclaimer: Everything written by robin-of-lox in the "Welcome to alt.discuss" articles are my own personal opinion. They may or may not be the opinion of WebTV, and nothing written here has any "official sanction" from WebTV Networks.

This month I'll give you some tips on posting to newsgroups, explain about how new alt.discuss groups are created, and go into a little more detail about some of the WebTV-related groups. For a more basic introduction to the alt.discuss newsgroups, take a look at last month's column.

Newsgroup Basics

Name in Parentheses

As you read the newsgroups, you will come across posts that have someone's name at the end of the subject line. This is to show that the poster is responding to a particular individual's post. It is still a public post (email is the acceptable way to respond privately). If you respond to that post, please be careful to delete the name from the subject line unless you are also responding to a post by that particular person.

Subject Lines

Speaking of subject lines, try to be as clear and concise as possible in them. Keep in mind that when the text size is set on Large, there are only 36 characters available to be read once the Re: has been added ("Re:" tells you that it's a reply to a previous post). "Help!" is not a very clear subject. "Help with Sig?" would make it clearer. "How to Put Pic in E-Mail Bkgrnd?" is more concise and the clearest of the lot. These are just examples, but I'm sure you get my drift.

The alt.discuss Hierarchy

This section will be dedicated to finding groups, voting for or against groups, proposing groups, and other relevant items.

Last month you learned in "How To Get There" that looking at the Table of Contents pages will give you all of the group names broken down in hierarchical order. For an alphabetical listing of all of the groups on one page see The Alt.Discuss Newsgroups List compiled by Anthony S.

The Voting Process

Have you been looking for a group that doesn't seem to be there? It may have been proposed and is in the voting process. To find out, go to news:alt.discuss.config and look for the daily post entitled "alt.discuss Vote Status for Day, Date" from nobody@vote.munitions.com. In this post are all the groups that have been proposed prior to 1:00 AM of the date. They are in alphabetical, not chronological, order.

So, you see a group that you would like to participate in. The next step is to vote for it. There are three ways to vote, and each way has its pros and cons:

1. The "Official" Way
Use the "Newsgroup Creation and Voting Rules." Follow the instructions carefully, since it's a robotic system and is stupid. You can find the instructions in news:alt.discuss.config. Once a month they are posted by nobody@vote.munitions.com, then Javelin (a WebTV user) re-posts them throughout the month. They can usually be found on the first page. Or, they are permanently archived at Anthony S's site.

2. Web pages
You can also vote through a Web site. For example, you can cast your vote through the World Wide Web Watcher's voting page. This is much easier to use than the "official" system, but they are maintained by users and though they are regularly updated, real life can sometimes interfere and occasionally a day or two might be missed. So always check the daily status post to make sure you're not missing something that you'd like to vote for or against.

3. Buttons in Posts and Emails
Never click on a button unless you know exactly where the information is going and what that information is. To find out what a button is going to do, you'll need to Bounce it by forwarding the post (click on Send) or email (click on Forward) to yourself and putting

in the body of the message (where you would normally write the letter). When it comes back to you, the HTML codes will be shown. This can look like a huge amount of gobbledy-gook, but look for where it says "advotes@vote.munitions.com" and see if it says YES or NO. It should have two parts that say YES or two parts that say NO. If there is a "no" button, and one part says NO but the other says YES, then that means the person is getting a "yes" vote every time the "no" button is clicked on.
This is dishonest but there is nothing in place at the moment to rectify it if this happens, and we are stuck with a group created by fraud. Therefore, never click on a button to vote against a group. Also, some people put different group names in the button field. So if you think you are voting for a particular group, you might be voting for a different one. That's why you should either Bounce all posts or emails with buttons, or simply ignore them and use one of the other methods for voting.

<blackface>The Groups</blackface>
Last month I gave you an overall view of the kinds of groups available in news:alt.discuss. This month I would like to take a closer look at those groups that focus on WebTV and the Internet. With "upgrade fever" running rampant, these groups are a good place to hear (well, ok, read) rumors and to find out what is really happening.
Reminder: always lurk for bit and read numerous posts and entire threads prior to posting in any alt.discuss or USENET newsgroup.
(Most of us start out in webtv.users. I did and I suggest that if you are new to WebTV you spend a few weeks reading as much as possible in there. It is a wonderful place to learn oodles of things about how this box works and what you can do with it. webtv.users is a group moderated by WebTV employees and is not part of alt.discuss, but I wanted to bring it up, because it's a good place to start.)
The oldest and probably most respected group to fall into this category is news:alt.discuss.n2play. It was created on June 3, 1997, and was the first "techie" group. It was made to be, in the words of its founder (user n2play): "An alternative to webtv.users, where everyone can help each other work out problems, ask and answer questions and a place to share opinions that might not be posted or appropriate elsewhere, and hopefully always handle things with a sense of humor."
Since its inception, well over a hundred other groups have been added to the alt.discuss list. But the original intent remains at alt.discuss.n2play, and it is still a friendly place where even the dumbest questions are answered with respect for the asker (I know, I have asked some doozies).

The rest of the groups here are in alphabetical order.
.announce
The first group on the list. This is the place for announcing new newsgroups, Web sites, or anything that could be of importance to the WebTV community.
.config
This is where the hierarchy of alt.discuss is discussed. It is where the daily status posts are, and where the proposed groups are announced.
.improve.webtv
Some people like WebTV, others really love it. This is where a group of hardcore lovers of WebTV get together and talk about what they would like to see changed, and how to go about changing it. It can get a bit technical at times, but you don't need to be a rocket scientist to post there.
.mod.internet
A moderated group where people post Web sites of interest.
.webtv.announce
A smaller version of alt.discuss.announce.
.webtv.classic
Information about the Classic box, its features, how to use it, etc. Of course, lots of talk about the upgrade being sent out to the Classic users over the next couple of weeks.
.webtv.links
An unmoderated group for posting links to interesting Web sites.
.webtv.privacy
Discussion about privacy issues on the Internet.
.webtv.questions
A place for asking and answering questions on how to best utilize your WebTV.
.webtv.upgrade
You guessed it, talk about the upgrade. Rumors, facts, everything in between.
.webtv.users
This is a different group than the moderated "official" webtv.users, but is a good place for information on using your WebTV.
.webtv.watchtower
Discussion on current alt.discuss problems (flamers, trolls, troublemakers in general) and ways to deal with them.
.webtvaddicts
A lighthearted look at addiction to WebTV.
.webtvplus
Information about the Plus box, its features, how to use it, etc. There is also upgrade info as the Plus users get more and more antsy waiting for their upcoming upgrade.
.wtvnews
News and views about WebTV and other convergence products and applications.</pr>

Don't forget that you can read many of the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) and charters for these groups at penryn's Newsgroups HOME.

<blackface>Q&A</blackface>
<blackface>Q.</blackface> Is there a moderated newsgroup in news:alt.discuss for kids or young teenagers?
<blackface>A.</blackface> No, there isn't. Surfwatch and Kidfriendly (take a look at this WebTV News article for more info on them) block access to all of the alt.discuss groups. Alt.discuss is an adult forum, and if your children could get into one, they could get into all of them. There are many groups in alt.discuss that are not appropriate for children.
There is also the question of who would moderate such groups? In alt.discuss, the few moderated groups are moderated by users, not by WebTV staff. There does seem to be a need for some kind of children's groups though. All I can recommend is that parents who are interested write to kids@corp.webtv.net with suggestions.

Vote For Your Favorite Group!
Now that you have had some time to check out the news:alt.discuss groups, I'll tell you about a poll being taken. It is being done by Yankeefan1, who is a strong supporter of the alt.discuss groups and a valued member of our community. Click here to vote on your favorite groups.

robin-of-lox is not an employee of WebTV, but an owner/user who has been online since August '97.
